Single On Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is this week, and if you’re one of the 124 million single Americans, this holiday can be anything but romantic. It’s full of happy couples, hearts full of chocolate, and a slew of sappy social media posts that make you want to roll your eyes and scarf down a pint of Ben and Jerry’s.

Not so fast! First of all, have you ever researched the origins of Valentine’s Day? Kind of creepy, and definitely odd. If not, read it here. A little sneak peek – they dipped sacrificed goat hide in blood and “slapped” women in the streets with them in order to make them more fertile in the coming year. No thanks.

If that’s not enough to make you say, “See ya, I’ll sit this one out!” and you’re still determined to celebrate, why not treat yourself to all the goodies you’d be looking for from that “special someone.” You’ve heard it a million times: You don’t need no man. And men: You don’t need no woman (although life is better with one, just sayin’)

And besides, what’s more romantic than self-love? And what’s better than pampering yourself? Zip, zero, nada. So if you find yourself single and alone on February 14, here are some ideas of how to make it the best Valentine’s Day yet – minus the bloody goat hide.

  1. Unplug and unwind. Take the day (or afternoon) off work and plan a trip to the spa. Get your nails done, book a massage, switch up your hair – whatever gets you feeling relaxed and sexy. Leave your phone at home or switch it to silent. Spend the entire day pampering yourself and letting your mind unwind. You’ll feel re-charged and ready to tackle the upcoming week(end).

  2. Make an elaborate meal. Head to the grocery store and buy all of the ingredients for an out-of-this-world 3-course dinner. Don’t worry about the price tag – this is a special night. You’re celebrating YOU. Turn on some jams and dance around the kitchen while you’re cooking up something good. Light some candles and eat seconds…thirds…heck, as many plates as you can handle. Don’t skimp on the dessert either! Tonight, calories don’t count.

  3. Bouquet babe. If you love nothing more than seeing a fresh, beautiful bouquet of flowers sitting on your window sill, then get off your bum and go buy the best one you can find. Buy two! One for the kitchen and one for your room. Write yourself a nice little love note and set it out where you can read it every day. Change the water daily and keep those beauties alive and vibrant.

  4. Group gig. Grab your best friends and make a night of it. Set up a reservation at a nice restaurant. Dress to the nines. Order fancy food and ask for wine recommendations. Head to a movie afterward but skip the chick flick (it’ll be way too busy) – opt for a comedy instead. Spend the evening laughing and reminding yourself that being single isn’t bad at all because you’ve got endless amount of time to spend surrounded by the people you love.

Valentine’s Day is all about love, and love starts with YOU. Sure, having someone to share the little things with is great — but sometimes we need to take the time to show ourselves the same lovin’ we’d show them. You’ll have plenty of years spent with your other half down the road – enjoy this time while it’s here.

Whether you’re paired up and loving on your SO this Wednesday or doing your own thing, take some time to say, “I love you” and celebrate.

Positive Vibes,

Kails

PS: Don’t forget to take full advantage of the half-priced candy on the 15th.
