5 Tricks To Drink More Water

Exactly how much water we need to drink per day remains up for debate. What isn’t up for debate is that we need water. Like, a lot of it.

How much you need depends on your health, activity level, body size, and a whole handful of other factors. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is:

  • About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men
  • About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women

Water makes up about 60% of your body weight and is expelled through your breath, sweat, urination, and poop. So if you’re not replenishing those wells, your health, skin, strength, and mental focus can suffer. PS: almost every single body function depends on water for full efficiency. That’s nerd talk for: YOUR ENTIRE BODY DEPENDS ON THIS STUFF.

Here’s the thing — most people don’t find water to be near as tasty as an ice cold soda or a Starbuck’s frappe. So I’ve come up with a few tricks to make drinking water a little bit easier.

  1. Buy a really cute water bottle.
  2. Leave a bottle at work. Or in your backpack if you’re still a student. This way, no matter where you’re at you’ll have no excuse not to keep sippin’.
  3. Put a full glass by your bed at night. Take a couple of minutes when you first wake up to down some water, stretch, think, plan, yawn, etc. Take the cup with you while you get ready and finish it before eating breakfast.
  4. Flavor it! Slice up some fresh fruit (my favorite is pineapple & strawberry) and infuse a jug of water with it. Keep it in your fridge so when you’re craving something sweet to drink you’ll reach for the water instead of the soda.
  5. Drink a glass before every “fun” drink. If you absolutely NEED to down something sugary-sweet, drink a full glass of water first. This will fill you up a bit and ensure your fluids aren’t made primarily of liquid sugar.

Positive vibes,

Kaili
