Why I’m Doing (Modified) Whole30

Fad diets — I’m not into them.

However, the Whole30 is a “diet” that I’ve tried before and didn’t absolutely hate. What is it? Read a full explanation here. I’ll detail my own “rules” in a bit, since I’m not sticking hard and fast to the ones described above.

For as long as I can remember (literally… since childhood) I’ve struggled with lots of digestive issues. Sometimes it manifests in sharp belly pain, sometimes it’s bloating like a puffed up balloon, sometimes I don’t #2 for days, and sometimes I can’t stop. Sorry if that’s tmi but let’s be real — everybody poos.

I’m talking issues that kept me home from school, prom, athletic events, work, etc. because I quite literally couldn’t stand up straight.

I’ve spent countless hours in hospital rooms trying to figure out what’s wrong with me. I’ve tried everything: cutting out gluten, staying away from dairy, not eating anything at all (that’s a story for another time). NOTHING works. Not a single diet, not a single pill, nada.

Basically, eating sucks. I’m always looking forward to a good meal until the second the food hits my tongue and my stomach screams, “Nooooooo! Stop!!!!!” UGH.

Instead of relying on a bunch of “specialists” or a magic pill/treatment, I’ve experimented over the years on my own. Here are the foods that almost never give me a hard time: fruits, veggies, eggs, lean meats, beans/legumes, and nuts.

Which is why the Whole30 intrigued me, because those are basically what the diet consists of.

I gave it a shot last year and felt amazing. For the first time I didn’t have a belly ache for over a week in a row. I slept like a baby and woke up before my alarm with overwhelming amounts of energy. My skin looked amazing. My stomach was free from any bloat. I looked and felt better than ever before.

Which is why I’m giving the Whole30 another go. Except this time I’m not sticking completely to the “rules.” Here’s what I’m doing:

  • Staying away from: added sugars, processed foods, grains, dairy, alcohol, eating out
  • Limiting: caffeine, chewing gum, packaged foods — RX bars, etc.
  • Drinking tons of water
  • Skipping all cardio and cutting my weight lifting back
  • Eating all the fruits, veggies, lean meats, eggs, and nuts
  • Not weighing or measuring myself
  • Trying to snack less

Basically, I’m eating healthy and not getting tipsy — which is a bummer — but also a great excuse for when your friends want to go out but you’d rather stay in and read with your cat like the true grandmother you are.

Today was day 1 and I’m feeling good! Not starving, no belly ache, mentally clear, and ready to take on the challenge. I’m going to talk more about what a typical grocery haul looks like as well as share a few of my Whole30 approved recipes.

If you’d like to know more please don’t hesitate to reach out! I’d love to take you on this journey with me and/or learn your tips and tricks.

Positive Vibes,
