5 Simple Ways To Care For The Earth

April 22, 2018 is Earth Day, and I must admit I’ve done a poor job of celebrating our miraculous planet in the past. I’ve kind of just taken it for granted and not given our home a second thought. Which is totally wrong of me and I’m determined to make a change this year! Starting with a brief education on some cool Earth facts:

• Earth is the only planet not named after a mythological god or goddess. The word “Earth” actually comes from the Old English word “ertha” meaning ground or land.
• 70% of Earth’s surface is covered by water. That’s a whole buncha H2O.
• The highest point on Earth is Mount Everest – 8.8 kilometers or 5.4 miles. I’m exhausted just THINKING about that climb.
• Earth isn’t a perfect sphere. It’s what you’d call a “squashed sphere.”
• Earth is recycled. HOW COOL. Rock that starts out as magma deep in the Earth eventually pushes its way to the top – becoming different types of rock along the way. The cycle then repeats itself.

This year’s Earth Day mission is to provide the information and inspiration needed to fundamentally change human attitude and behavior about plastics. Read more here. And track your personal plastic usage here.

The official Earth Day website has tons of cool information and ideas to support your Earth Day adventures. I definitely suggest checking it out and making a pledge to reduce your plastic use.

For now, here are 5 simple ways to show the Earth all your love – not just on Earth Day – but every day.

1. Go Reusable When You Can. Disposable one-time use products clog up our landfills and harm our environment. Whenever possible, opt for reusable products such as glass water bottles, food pouches, straws, and grocery bags.

2. Pay Attention To How You’re Using Water. Turn the tap off while you brush your teeth. Don’t run the shower while you dilly dally about. Wash clothes in cold water when possible. Little things turn into big things when you practice them daily!

3. Increase Your Home’s Efficiency. Change your light bulbs to CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs). They last 10 times longer than a standard bulb and use at least two-thirds less energy. Clean your air filters so your system doesn’t have to work overtime. Program your thermostat so you aren’t wasting energy while you’re away. Turn lights off when you leave the room.

4. Walk More. Not only will leaving your car at home reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but you’ll get a great workout in too!

5. Reduce Food Packaging. Try to cut back on the number of plastic grocery bags and fruit/veggies bags you use. Bring reusable totes to the store with you, buy in bulk when you can, and bring your own coffee mug/cup to work with you.

There are tons of ways to take care of our amazing planet – these are just a start! How do you say, “I love you” to The Earth? Let me know in the comments below!

Positive Vibes,
