Setting Monthly Goals

I’m a tad bit goal obsessed. As in, I’m writing out my goals on a daily basis, letting them sit, reading them, and re-working them. It’s a habit, but I guess there’s worse things I could be addicted to, right?

Something that’s seriously changed my goal-game is setting a monthly “focus.” This idea stemmed from a podcast I listened to (shocker!) where the woman described a year of “happiness.” She’d pick a piece of her life that she wanted to increase happiness in (work, marriage, health, etc.) and focus solely on that one area each month.

I thought this was an awesome idea and decided to adapt it a bit into my own. And I’d be lying if I said I haven’t seen vast improvements in my mental clarity, daily happiness, relationships, and fitness.

Here’s what I did/do:

  1. Pick ONE area of my life I want to focus on and assign it to each month. For example: January was friendships and February was ME.
  2. Write out 5-10 action steps I can take each day/week to work toward improving that area. Example steps for friendships: write 2 friends a note each week, set up a “date” each week with someone I haven’t seen in a while, call or FaceTime a friend every night.
  3. Write my action steps down somewhere I see them every day.
  4. Journal a few nights each week on how everything has been going and make sure I’m hitting all of my action steps.
  5. Voila!

I’ve found that setting a whole bunch of major goals can be a little intimidating, not to mention time consuming. So picking a monthly focus allows me enough time to reach for something big without letting it consume and overwhelm me.

A few focus ideas:

  • Nutrition
  • Family
  • Education
  • Flexibility
  • Community
  • Faith
  • Relationships
  • Friendships
  • Workouts
  • Saying “no”

Positive vibes,
